Biography
Maceo Olrich was born in Soviet Ukraine in 1972. As an infant, his mother fled the Soviet Union, and she and Maceo made their way to Los Angeles in 1974. Maceo’s mother worked to support and care for Maceo on her own.
In 1982, as a result of The Plagues, Maceo and his mother fled their home in Los Angeles and moved into a refugee camp located outside the city. The Olrichs continued to move between refugee camps through the 1980s. In 1987, Maceo’s mother died in a cholera outbreak in the Los Angeles Metro Area.
In 1990, Maceo turned himself over to the custody of Section 26. He had begun producing small Maceo Steel structures on his own. With the help of Section 26 personnel, Maceo was able to gain some control over the size and shape of the Maceo Steel structures he produced. He was hired by Ultracorps later that year, where he continued to develop his abilities.
In 1992, Ultracorps unveiled Maceo Steel to the world. Ultracorps used the substance to lay pipes all over the Metro Areas, to provide water, heating and sewer services, replacing old pipes destroyed by The Plagues.
The use of Maceo Steel continued to expand as Maceo gained greater control over his abilities. Maceo Steel foundations allowed for the construction of large multi-level buildings. Wide, unbreakable Maceo Steel pipes allowed for the creation of the Hoover sanitation system. Maceo Steel rails and supports allowed for the creation of The Slug transportation system. Maceo even constructed dozens of structures made entirely out of Maceo Steel.
Maceo continued to work for Ultracorps, mass producing vast quantities of Maceo Steel fashioned into variety of shapes and sizes, until he died suddenly of a heart-attack in 2003, at the age 31. He was never married and had no heirs. Ultracorps continues to use Maceo Steel in new construction projects, utilizing its stockpile of Maceo Steel structures that Maceo created before his death.
Differentiation
Maceo’s abilities were never fully understood. The most prominent theory was that Maceo was a Fission powered Different, who was able to use the vast energy his cells manufactured to separate out carbon atoms from carbon-dioxide molecules. Maceo was then able to arrange these carbon atoms into structures of various shapes and sizes. Maceo Steel structures are made up of continuously linked carbon atoms, essentially making each structure its own molecule. This means Maceo Steel is as strong as the bond between the carbon atoms, making it virtually indestructible by conventional methods. Maceo Steel can withstand virtually limitless heat, pressure, and force.
By concentrating, Maceo could direct the size and shape of the structures he created. There appeared to be no energy-based limit on the amount of Maceo Steel Maceo could produce, the only practical limit was his focus and his body’s need for rest. Only Maceo’s abilities were supported by Fission, Maceo had normal human diet and nutrient needs.
